Bending backwards for local charity

Bikram yoga involves maneuvering the body into various positions – such as the rabbit pose, peacock in lotus and the guillotine – for at least 90 minutes in a heated room that can reach temperatures of 110 degrees.

As a yoga instructor in her Bikram Yoga White Rock studio, Jen Hanover used to practise the process about five times a week. Since January, however, she has committed to the challenge of doing it every day for one year, to raise funds for the Peace Arch Community Services Food Bank. Hanover conceived the idea for a 360-day ‘yogathon' after hearing about the food bank's need for healthy foods such as whole grain pastas, fresh fruit and vegetables, 100 per cent fruit juice and canned protein.

A stock of healthy foods is especially important considering more than 400 of the food bank's clients are children.
