More college athletes in the Philadelphia region are adding yoga to their training schedules, although there has been little scientific study of whether it boosts performance.
Teams are turning to the discipline to augment their training regimens. Coaches and instructors say the benefits include improved flexibility, strength and mental grit.
Haverford has added yoga, and so have the football teams at Villanova and Princeton, the women's soccer team at Penn, women's crew at Saint Joseph's and the men's soccer team at Swarthmore.
Researchers say training with yoga appears to have little downside. But they say the question of improved performance has not undergone rigorous scientific study.
A new Yoga Journal survey indicates that nearly 16 million Americans do yoga, and about 8 percent of them are in the prime college age range of 18 to 24.
