Kripalu, town discuss tax payment

STOCKBRIDGE — The Board of Assessors has placed the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health on the town's tax rolls for the first time, amid questions over whether its yoga and wellness programs are in keeping with its tax-exempt status.

The new assessment reflects an $8.44 million property valuation, and a tax bill could top $50,000. Town tax bills will be mailed in a few weeks, when the assessors finalize the town's fiscal 2008 tax rate.

However, Principal Assessor Michael T. Blay said that the matter is far from resolved, as the assessors are still evaluating information provided by Kripalu. Both sides described the matter as amicable, but Blay said that, for procedural reasons, Kripalu will receive a tax bill, which it can appeal.

"There has been so much concern about all this (tax exempt) valuation around town and how it impacts the overall town tax rate," Blay said.
